Pest Control

4 Pest Prevention Practices

Let’s be honest. No one necessarily wants to have to call a pest control company in order to have pests and other vermin eradicated from their home. Unfortunately, in some cases, it’s simply unavoidable.

Unwanted pests find their way into your home and can severely disrupt your life. However, you should know that pest prevention can sometimes be your best defense against dealing with this problem.

Here are a few pest prevention practices that can help you in the future:

1. KNOW YOUR ENEMY

The most important thing you can do to keep pests away is to educate yourself about the different causes of the most common types of pests like ants, mosquitoes, and mice. By knowing more about the pest’s habits, you will know what to look for if you start to get an infestation and you will also know how to create an environment that is not conducive to their liking.

2. REMOVE FOOD SOURCES

Pests will find a way to get to any food source that they can find. If you leave empty pizza boxes out or don’t seal leftovers, you risk a whole host of pests finding a new home in your home.

Make sure to store food in plastic or glass containers, away from windows and doors. Also make sure that your trash cans are covered, sealed, and taken out regularly because these are places that can easily attract an infestation.

3. WATCH OUT FOR WATER

Water can cause a plethora of problems for any homeowner. Not only can standing or dripping water cause mold, but it can also attract pests. Mosquitoes thrive in standing water and moldy, rotting wood under your house can easily attract mites and earwigs who will happily take up residence near a pipe leak.

Make sure your home’s plumbing is thoroughly sealed and you remove any standing water from around your home.

4. SEAL HIDING PLACES

Pests can easily hide in holes around and in your home. Spiders love a good crack in the side of the home and, as fall comes, poorly sealed windows can lead to an army of insects finding refuge in your warm home.

Take the time to seal up any visible cracks in concrete and around entryways with a substance like caulk in order to keep these pests from making themselves right at home.
